As the Notre Dame football team's quarterback battle continues to roll along, it's looking more and more like CJ Carr isn't the obvious favorite many analysts thought he was at the beginning of the summer. In fact, he might be the underdog these days.
When head coach Marcus Freeman announced a quarterback battle in the winter, many people thought it was more lip service than anything else. Carr was the guy the coaching staff brought in to win the job. However, he hasn't won it yet, and the longer the competition goes on, the more it appears everyone was wrong.
Kenny Minchey has taken charge in the Notre Dame football QB race
On Thursday morning, On3's Pete Nakos underlined how things are shifting, reporting that Kenny Minchey is now the favorite to win the starting quarterback job for the Notre Dame football team. Nakos did add the caveat that things are still far from settled, and Minchey's edge isn't a large one.
Sources have given Kenny Minchey the slight edge to this point in Notre Dame camp. CJ Carr still has time to beat out Minchey for the starting job and earn the nod against Miami. https://t.co/0NzTMekcjd

"Sources have given Kenny Minchey the slight edge to this point in Notre Dame camp," Nakos wrote on X. "CJ Carr still has time to beat out Minchey for the starting job and earn the nod against Miami."
Minchey could win the job. After all, he offers a strong arm and a mobility that Carr doesn't possess. That fits into offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock's game plan for his quarterbacks if the last two years in South Bend and with LSU are any indication.
Denbrock even hinted at the situation right at the beginning of fall camp.
"There is absolutely no reason why Kenny can't be the starter," Denbrock said.
The prevailing theory is that the decision as to who will start against Miami for the Notre Dame football team will come next week. However, if the battle continues to be as close as it has been so far, it could take until the week against the Hurricanes before a starter is official.
