Now that Notre Dame is on the hunt for a 2028 quarterback, the Irish may have officially zeroed in on Lucas Prock.

Marcus Freeman and Co. are on the lookout for a new quarterback in the 2028 class after originally thinking they had nailed things down with Trey Tagliaferri. However, after six days, he decommitted and then decided he wanted to be an Oklahoma Sooner instead. That commitment came after several other quarterbacks had already landed their own teams. In effect, the team had to go back to the drawing board.

It now looks like they hit the board hard and are in a good position with Lucas Prock. The most interesting tidbit about how Notre Dame found its next target is that, like Tagliaferri, Prock is from New Jersey.

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound four-star quarterback from Hun School (Princeton, NJ) is ranked as the No. 68 player in the 2028 class, the No. 7 player at his position, and the No. 3 player in the state of New Jersey according to Rivals Industry Rankings.

Lucas Prock emerges as Notre Dame football’s next 2028 quarterback target

While it looks like Freeman's crew has a very good chance of getting Prock into the boat, the fight is far from over. He's one of the most sought-after players in his class. In addition to Notre Dame, he has offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Colorado, Duke, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, LSU, Louisville, Maryland, Michigan, Nebraska, North Carolina, Northwestern, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, South Carolina, UCLA, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Washington, among others.

According to Steve Wiltfong, Notre Dame is in very good standing with the young quarterback. However, it looks like they're facing off against Indiana and Ohio State. It's hard to think of two programs that will be harder to fight off in this recruiting race.

It's not hard to figure out why the New Jersey prospect is so highly ranked. In 2025, Prock completed 226 of 309 passes for 4,330 yards, 41 touchdowns and just 7 interceptions at Hun School. He also rushed 11 times for 154 yards and one touchdown, finishing with 4,484 total yards.

There was a time when Penn State and Kentucky were considered two of the top teams for the 4-star quarterback; however, it looks like they've dropped off, and the Irish, Buckeyes, and Hoosiers are now the teams to beat.

Prock hasn't been shy about taking visits, as he's checked out a ton of possible teams. That includes three visits to Notre Dame, the most recent in March. The next step will be for Marcus Freeman and Co. to get the quarterback prospect to South Bend for gameday this fall and go from there.
