Notre Dame’s bizarre QB decommitment quickly turns into Oklahoma win

Trey Tagliaferri's quick decommitment from the Notre Dame football team was already one of the stranger twists in the Marcus Freeman era. It was especially strange considering just how hot the Fighting Irish staff has been on the recruiting trail. However, on Friday, it got a bit stranger as the 2028 quarterback announced he'd already found his new home about a week after he originally committed to Freeman and Co.

Tagliaferri announced he was now an Oklahoma Sooner, just one day after becoming a free agent. To some degree, the announcement wasn't a total shock. The gunslinger had been quite enamored with the Sooners when he took his official visit to Norman. His visit to South Bend had seemingly helped change his mind, but with a few days to think on it, he realized he apparently realized where he wanted to go all along.

It appears that when Trey Tagliaferri pulled the trigger for Notre Dame, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Ben Arbuckle and the Sooners never backed away. Oklahoma remained aggressive throughout the process, ultimately winning out for the 247Sports Composite 4-star quarterback.

At 6-foot-1, Tagliaferri brings a live arm and operates comfortably from the pocket. While he can move outside the pocket a bit, he never looked like a perfect fit for what Irish offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock likes to do. However, that arm, along with stunning sophomore stats, makes him an ideal fit for where Arbuckle's offense is trending.

Trey Tagliaferri commits to Oklahoma after Notre Dame football decommitment

Throughout the process, it was clear Oklahoma's quarterback recruitment centered around Tagliaferri and Brady Quinn, but as things progressed, Tagliaferri emerged as the Sooners' top priority. When they lost the battle originally, they found a way to reverse course less than a week later.

Last season at Bergen Catholic, Tagliaferri threw for 2215 yards, 29 touchdowns, and just 3 interceptions, completing 131 of his 211 pass attempts. He amassed more than 30 teams vying for his services. In addition to Notre Dame and Oklahoma, he garnered offers from Alabama, Auburn, Boston College, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Penn State, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, and Virginia, among others.

The 247Sports Composite ratings have him as the No. 205 player nationally, No. 14 quarterback, and No. 9 prospect in New Jersey.

Now that Trey Tagliaferri is Oklahoma-bound, the Notre Dame football team has to go back to the drawing board. While less than ideal, the good news is that the Irish don't absolutely need a quarterback in the 2028 class, though they'd clearly like to land one. They don't need to stoop to just anyone to replace the decommitment.
