The Notre Dame football team officially has a problem in the 2028 class when it comes to quarterback recruiting. When Trey Tagliaferri decommitted from the Fighting Irish just a week after committing, it was seen as a “no skin off their nose” type of situation in large part because Marcus Freeman and Co. had Lucas Prock to fall back on. However, Prock committed to Indiana on Thursday, and now there are real questions about who Plan C might be.
The announcement was a bit of a surprise, especially that it wasn’t for the Irish. Originally planning to wait until after his junior season, Prock ultimately decided there was no reason to delay once he became convinced Bloomington was the right fit. While he had talked about speeding things up, quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli and the offensive staff liked where things stood with them and Prock. However, Curt Cignetti is on a generational run both on the field and recruiting-wise and managed to get one of the best quarterbacks in the 2028 cycle.
“I kind of got serious about it the last month or so,” Prock told Rivals. “I started to cut things down and lock in with a school so I wouldn’t have to worry about it. I didn’t want to rush it, and I don’t think it’s rushed at all. After conversations with my family, the decision became clear. We concluded that Indiana is the best spot for me and my future.”
Filling in the blanks as to how Notre Dame lost out on Lucas Prock’s recruitment, the quarterback said things really started to clarify recently.

“I’d say maybe a week or so after I put out my top five, they were the one showing the most consistent love and really being there for me this whole time,” Prock said. “That definitely showed a lot compared to the other programs. I think that’s really what separated them.”
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound four-star quarterback from Hun School (Princeton, NJ) is the second quarterback the Irish thought they were in good standing for from New Jersey, with Tagliaferri being from Bergen Catholic.
Prock is ranked as the No. 68 player in the 2028 class, the No. 7 player at his quarterback position and the No. 3 player in the state of New Jersey according to Rivals Industry Rankings. Last year, he completed 226 of 309 passes for 4,330 yards, 41 touchdowns and seven interceptions during his sophomore season. He also rushed for 154 yards, finishing with 4,484 total yards in 12 games.
Notre Dame made four high-profile offers to quarterbacks in the 2028 class. Kingston Preyear, Lucas Prock, Trey Tagliaferri, and Neimann Lawrence have all now committed elsewhere. It’s possible with this latest loss that the Irish could forgo getting a QB in next year’s class and take aim at 2029.
