Notre Dame football national championship path changes after SEC shocker
Notre Dame football's chance at the fith seed took a hit on Saturday night as the Georgia Bulldogs upset the Texas Longhorns in the SEC Championship game. That win likely means that while Georgia was behind the Irish in last week's bracket, the SEC champ will now jump into Texas' spot and be the second seed when the new rankings are released.
Texas is now 11-2 as their two losses both came to Georgia. Texas lost a close battle in Overtime to Georgia by the score of 22-19. Because of the overtime loss, Notre Dame fans should not be shocked if the committee decides to put the Longhorns ahead of the Irish on Sunday.
The Bulldogs' victory now causes questions as to whether the Irish should stay put at the six seed, jump to the five seed or even fall to the seven seed depending how much the committee reads into giving the Oregon Ducks a better game than most expected.
How a Georgia win impacts Notre Dame football
The Irish falling to the 7th-seed is seemingly the worst case scenario. The Blue and Gold would most likely play Indiana in the first round and then the Bulldogs in the second round. Where the five or six seed has a much easier path, as they will play Arizona State, Boise State, ACC champion or Alabama in their path to the semifinals.
Since Penn State fell to Oregon the main question entering Sunday will be who gets that five and six seed. Texas and Penn State both competed in their conference championship while the Irish haven't been seen since their win over USC.
The College Football Playoffs Selection Show takes place Sunday at noon and it's then that Notre Dame football will find out it's fate. It seems likely that the Irish will play host in South Bend, but who they'll face off against in the first round and what their path will be is still very much up in the air.
