The Notre Dame football team is headed to the playoffs. And depending on how everything shakes out this weekend, it’s possible they could get the No. 5 seed and host a playoff game. We’ve already laid out why getting that fifth seed is such a coveted spot. Especially for a team that can just rest and relax and sit and wait because they don’t have to play in a conference championship game.

All of that is good. The 11-1 record is good. The 10 straight wins is good. And so are the records that fell while the Irish were busy beating a hated rival.

Among those Notre Dame football  records that fell on Saturday afternoon/evening was the total points scored. With the final score of 49-35, that marked the most points ever scored in a series that started all the way back in 1925.

Notre Dame football sees several records fall in big win over USC

Maybe the most important record to fall for the Fighting Irish on Saturday is the one that is now held by Jeremiyah Love. Despite leaving the game early with a leg injury, Love scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run to open the scoring that meant he’s scored a TD in every single game this season.

His 12 straight games this season is the school record, he’d previously been tied for first place after las ween’s victory over Army.

And then there were the interception returns. First there was Christian Gray’s 99 yard return for a touchdown which tied for the second longest INT return in school history. That was followed by Xavier Watts with a 100-yard interception return on the next drive. That ties him with Jack Elder at the top of the school list. Elder got his interception return back in 1929.

Those marks were all about showing just how good a year Notre Dame football continues to have as it ramps up for a playoff run.
