Notre Dame football weighs key tackle shuffle to maximize O-line strength

As spring practice heats up, the Irish consider reshuffling tackles for a dominant line, fueling big hopes on offense.

The Notre Dame football team is working through quite a few things as spring practice gets underway. One of the issues that stands out is just who is going to get the starting offensive line jobs and where they will line up.

The Irish offensive line is expected to be one of the strengths of the team this year. It was considered so strong in fact that several guys who saw starting roles in 2024 left in the transfer portal. But that doesn’t mean that everything has already been totally sorted out. There’s plenty to still figure out to make the unit the best it can be.

As it turns out, one of the questions with the Notre Dame football team’s offensive linemen is who will be manning which tackle spot. It feels as though the fact that Guerby Lambert has had a good enough spring practice that coach Joe Rudolph might feel comfortable shifting things around if it means the Blue and Gold will be even better up front.

After practice earlier this week, Rudolph was asked about his plan for the unit and whether there might be some shifting around.

"Right now Guerby has been more the one to move to get both sides of it. It’s a good question. When we get Aamil [Wagner] back, it might be something we explore."

Having the flexibility to explore those kinds of moves is key for a team like Notre Dame football. More than some other squads, managing to open holes and get a push up front has been key to the Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price-centric offense to really get rolling.
