Notre Dame insider thinks huge edge recruiting win is nearly locked

The Irish may be closer than ever to landing the kind of pledge that changes the mood

Despite the Notre Dame football team taking some recruiting hits just ahead of a massive visit weekend, there is one player who could break up the funk in short order. Abraham Sesay is one of the best edge players in the 2027 class, and the Fighting Irish are considered one of the frontrunners for his services. In fact, according to at least one analyst, the fight for the Downingtown East (Exton, PA) 4-star prospect is pretty much over, and Marcus Freeman and Co. have emerged victorious.

Not everything is over, and things can change quickly this time of year, but “Irish Sports Daily recruiting insider, Christian McCollum, recently appeared on the Locked On Irish podcast to talk about where the Irish stand in several recruiting fights. The biggest and most important of those is the fight with LSU and Florida State.

According to McCollum, Notre Dame has been the leader for quite a while, and he's incredibly confident the Irish will close things out. In fact, he said his confidence that Abraham Sesay will eventually end up in South Bend is higher than for any other player on the board, other than maybe Julius Jones Jr, who happens to be a legacy prospect that other schools have to fight the lure of playing for his father's school.

"You talk to Abraham, he'll just be honest with you," McCollum said on the podcast. "He's looking for an institution that can provide high-level football and high-level academics, and that's why Notre Dame's been there. He's been consistent with that. A lot of kids will say that, and I'm not saying they're lying, but the more you talk to them, the more different factors come up, and the more things catch their attention."

Abraham Sesay momentum has Notre Dame football positioned to beat LSU and Florida State

McCollum went on to say that Sesay - who is ranked No. 27 nationally, No. 6 at EDGE, and No. 3 in Pennsylvania according to the 247Sports Composite ratings - is so dedicated to academics that Duke was once considered a real contender for his services. However, the Blue Devils can't offer the same level of football as the Golden Domers.

Sesay's interest in academics might be one reason McCollum believes LSU has fallen by the wayside and that the only team still standing is Notre Dame. Neither the Bayou Bengals nor the other contender, the Florida State Seminoles, can offer the kind of promise in the classroom that comes from attending the school in South Bend.

"He took a visit to LSU recently. I'm told LSU wants him very, very badly, but from talking to people down there, I'm not sure if they're as much of a factor as some people have said.”

At least some of what McCollum said jibes with what On3 analyst Steve Wiltfong said earlier this week.

"The buzz continues to favor Notre Dame for the Downingtown (Pa.) East pass rusher with Sesay set to return to South Bend this weekend for his official visit. LSU looks like the biggest competitor, with Sesay enjoying his spring and summer trips to Baton Rouge. Duke and Florida State round out the finalists."

All of this is very good news for Notre Dame heading into a massive recruiting weekend. Considering the Irish had a couple of players decide not to consider them anymore, Abraham Sesay committing to Marcus Freeman and Co. would be a real shot in the arm for the program that's lost a bit fo momentum.
