Notre Dame commitment looks ready to unravel after forbidden Blacksburg visit

Notre Dame football might be about to lose its second commit in the last few weeks. 4-star linebacker Amarri Irvin took a visit to Virginia Tech this weekend, and that visit followed an OV to Michigan State not long ago. Considering that Irish head coach Marcus Freeman tends to frown on commitments taking any visits at all, it sure seems like Irvin is on his way out.

Irvin’s visit to Blacksburg carries even more of the smell of a player about to decommit, because reports say Irish coaches talked him out of taking another official visit. Irvin had planned to check out Texas A&M, but he eventually agreed to skip the journey to College Station.

However, Irvin getting hosted by James Franklin this weekend is an especially big no-no, at least among Notre Dame fans. The Irish and Franklin have a shaky history after the former Penn State head coach tried to “little bro” Freeman in the lead-up to the two teams’ matchup in the 2024 College Football Playoff. Freeman showed who was the little bro after all, after ND beat Penn State courtesy of a dramatic comeback late in the game.

As far as Irvin’s visit goes, going to Virginia Tech makes it seem like he's simply looking for a different place to eventually play. Just why he’s soured so much on South Bend is one of those questions that doesn’t have an answer at the moment.

Amarri Irvin’s Virginia Tech trip makes Notre Dame football decommit watch louder

It made some sense that Irvin visited Michigan State. His father is former Spartan Sedrick Irvin Sr. Not only did he do well in college, but he also had a few years in the NFL. It’s safe to say Amarri’s dad wouldn’t be against him attending his dad’s alma mater.

Interestingly enough, should Amarri decide to go elsewhere, it wouldn’t be the first time Notre Dame thought it had a member of his family in the fold only to eventually lose his commitment. Amarri’s older brother is Sedrick Irvin Jr., who was committed to the Irish in the 2023 class. The elder Irvin ended up going to Stanford, where he still plays.

It seems clear that Notre Dame waived its unofficial rule against commits taking official visits when the linebacker prospect went to East Lansing, with good reason. However, if he keeps using the soft spot in Freeman’s heart by taking other visits, it stands to reason he’ll eventually be told that the Irish will start looking elsewhere.

The real issue here is that Irvin is the only linebacker committed to the Fighting Irish in the 2027 class. It stands to reason that were he the second or third, the two sides might have already parted ways. For now, it appears the school is willing to let him see if the grass is greener elsewhere while still officially a commitment.

Notre Dame fans should expect that to change in the very near future, as it doesn’t appear Amarri Ivin is as committed to playing in South Bend as he once was.
