The Notre Dame football team is no doubt plenty happy about their 2028 quarterback. Trey Tagliaferri pulled the trigger for the Irish late last week, which means the Fighting Irish no longer have to get out there and hustle to stay in the mix for players such as Kingston Preyear. That’s especially a good thing considering that Preyear just announced the three schools he’s still considering, and the Golden Domers are officially out of the running.
In addition to three finalists, the Montgomery, Alabama, product, rated as the No. 44 overall player and No. 4 quarterback in his class according to the 247Sports Composite, now has a commitment date. On July 10, he’ll pick either Alabama, Florida, or Vanderbilt. Considering where he’s from, it’s not surprising that all the final candidates are from the SEC.
Preyear transferred to Benjamin Russell High School after his freshman season at Montgomery Catholic, which he led to a state championship. As a sophomore, he threw for 3,026 yards, 34 touchdowns, and just 5 interceptions. He also totaled 518 yards and 2 more touchdowns on the ground.
The former Notre Dame target isn’t simply a one-sport star either. In fact, Preyear is quite active and doesn’t seem to like downtime, considering he also plays baseball and basketball and is a track-and-field stud.
Kingston Preyear cuts Notre Dame football out after Trey Tagliaferri commitment
Preyear’s finalists are in different positions when it comes to quarterbacks they already have in the fold. Alabama currently has two pledged QBs in the 2027 class. Elijah Haven, from Baton Rouge, is the nation’s No. 3 player at the position; in-state product Trent Seaborn is No. 16. Florida has an in-state pledge from No. 11 QB Davin Davidson. Vanderbilt has a commitment from California’s Matthew Smith.
That would seem to indicate that the quarterback didn’t cut off Notre Dame simply because the Irish already have a quarterback commit in Tagliaferri. It seems more likely that he simply didn’t want to head outside the SEC backyard.
For Notre Dame, the commitment of Trey Tagliaferri served as a way for Marcus Freeman and his staff to nail down the position for another year. In the past few seasons, they’ve tended to pursue more than one signal caller in the class and then stage a kind of race to the altar, taking the first of their top targets who actually pulls the trigger on a commitment.
That approach has worked very well for Notre Dame in the last few classes, and now, as long as they can keep Trey Tagliaferri, the sting of being left off the finalist list by Kingston Preyear is blunted.
