The Notre Dame football team is so hot on the recruiting trail that the Fighting Irish are now dipping their toes in some unusual waters to see what kind of catch they can get. Such is the case with rising defensive tackle Segun Alexander.

Alexander announced on Sunday that he'll take an official visit to South Bend on June 19. That he's taking that official visit is interesting because, as of now, he's not looked all that hard at the Fighting Irish. For now, it appears this official visit will serve as a way for both sides to kick the tires and get to know each other before committing to a long-term relationship.

At the same time, Notre Dame better work fast if it wants to reel in the talented defensive lineman. In addition to the Golden Domers, Alexander garnered offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Austin Peay, Buffalo, California, Charlotte, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Howard, Kansas, Liberty, Miami, Miami (OH), Michigan State, North Carolina, Syracuse, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia.

Earlier this month, Alexander reclassified after originally being among the best defenders in the 2028 class. He'll now be part of the 2027 cycle, and that could start a frantic recruiting fight all on its own. It does look like Notre Dame is very much in the fight as he laid out his visits for the spring/summer.

Segun Alexander gives Notre Dame football a late chance at a rising Georgia defender

The 3-star defensive tackle out of Rabun Gap-Nacoochee (Rabun-Gap, GA) appears to be mainly looking toward five schools heading into official visit season. Those visits kick off next week, with him at Cal on May 29, followed by Texas A&M on June 5, Clemson on June 12, Vanderbilt on June 16, and Notre Dame on June 19.

It is obviously a very good sign that the No. 61 defensive lineman and No. 61 player in the state of Georgia for the 2027 class scheduled his final trip to South Bend. That gives Marcus Freeman and his crew a chance to make a real impression and fend off other schools' offers. Both in the more traditional sense and in NIL/revenue-share money.

One thing that could give Notre Dame a real leg up is that, judging by his final five schools, it's clear Alexander takes his education seriously. With Cal and Vanderbilt also in the mix, it helps that the Irish are well-practiced at making it clear that they're a fantastic program on the field and a fantastic experience off the field, as players prepare for when they take the pads off.

Notre Dame checks in as the No. 3 team in the 2027 recruiting class with 17 commitments. The team expects to land several more prospects in June, and it certainly appears that Segun Alexander could be one of them. Freeman and his staff will push hard during that June 19 visit. They'll also push hard to get the defensive lineman who amassed 36 tackles (18 TFL), 13 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovery last season.
