Notre Dame commit Champ Monds has started the season in a way that suggests he could become one of the best quarterbacks in the 2027 class. If he keeps performing at this level, Wonderful Monds IV could be a household name before long.
Last week, Monds opened the season by throwing for 195 yards and 3 touchdowns while completing 12 of 14 passes, to go with 4 rushes for 25 yards and 2 more scores in Vero Beach High’s 34-0 win over Jensen Beach High. He then lit up the scoreboard again on Friday night in a much tougher-fought game against Atlantic, 45-30.
The Notre Dame commit completed 21-of-26 for 380 yards and carried six times for 44 yards. Among the highlights of the night, Monds threw a 92-yard touchdown pass to go along with two more throws into the end zone. He also had a couple of goal-line runs into the end zone that helped his Vero Beach team improve to 2-0 on the season.
It’s clear that when Monds is on, his squad’s offense is nearly unstoppable. That’s a good thing, as his team’s defense struggled quite a bit more in its second game of the season after pitching that shutout in Week 1. What should stand out most for Fighting Irish fans is that Monds’ coach wants the ball in his hands as much as possible, even though Vero does have a very good running back in Marc Johns.
Champ Monds adds 424 yards and five touchdowns to Notre Dame football recruiting resume
The 6-foot-2, 224-pound 4-star quarterback is ranked as the No. 255 player in the 2027 class, the No. 21 player at his position and the No. 27 player in the state of Florida according to 247Sports Composite Rankings. He was originally a member of the 2028 class and was considered the top QB in that class early on, before deciding to reclassify to 2027.
As a freshman in 2024, he threw for 2,234 yards and 23 touchdowns while rushing for 502 yards and 9 scores. An ankle injury limited him to five games in 2025, but he still completed 71.4 percent of his passes for 691 yards, 7 touchdowns and no interceptions.
Now fully healthy, Monds is looking like a massive steal for the Notre Dame football team at a position where the Irish have had a ton of luck in recruiting of late. CJ Carr, of course, is coming into his second year as a starter as just a redshirt sophomore, and he’ll be backed up by freshmen Teddy Jarrard, Noah Grubbs and Blake Hebert.
