Concerning Notre Dame football trend continues with another decommit

For the second time this week, the Notre Dame football team suffered a decommitment from a player who had long been in the fold.

The Notre Dame football team is having a rough go of it lately. While they don’t need to worry about an upset this week, they do need to worry about keeping the rest of their commits locked down.

That’s because just one day after Deuce Knight decommitted from the Fighting Irish, Marcus Freeman and company lost their second commit of the week. This time it was a running back.

While Daniel Anderson wasn’t the biggest loss the team could face, the fact that it came one day after Knight is a problem. It’s also a problem because it seems to continue to be a problem for the Notre Dame football team. This comes when the coaching staff has had a problem reeling some of its top targets in the wide receiver pool.

Something is rotten in the state of recruiting. And while flips happen all the time, it sure seems like there’s something odd going on in South Bend.

Notre Dame football recruiting continues its downward trend

Anderson camped in South Bend for the Irish Invasion in June 2023. At that time, he only held an offer from Long Island. Marcus Freeman and company offered him that day. Over the last few months he’s added some Power Conference teams to the list of those interested — namely Colorado, Mississippi State and Tennessee - despite those offers, he committed in September of last year.

And yet, on Thursday, he decommitted. And now the Irish are once again trying to figure out how they want to deal with it. This close to the 2025 National Signing Day, the Irish could go after a running back to replace him. But it seems unlikely. At the moment, they now have just one running back, no quarterbacks and three receivers in the 2025 class.

Add in one tight end, and Notre Dame football has just five offensive specialists currently committed. All of this means the Irish are going to be going the transfer portal route this winter. But they also need to figure out what’s going on with their high school recruiting on the offensive side.
