Notre Dame football offense won’t be ‘polished glass’ out of the gate: Analyst

Since Mike Denbrock came back to the Notre Dame football program this winter, there’s been a ton of excitement over what his offense can do for the Fighting Irish. That excitement hasn’t just been from the fans.

There have been all sorts of players in Marcus Freeman’s program that are excited to get out there and run the offense against a live opponent. And that live opponent comes this Saturday against the Texas A&M Aggies.

While the excitement continues to build to see what the Notre Dame football team can do, there is at least one analyst offering up some reality. There is very little chance that the Denbrock offense is going to be entirely installed and run like a well oiled machine in the first game with so many new pieces.

“Notre Dame's offensive ceiling is higher than most years. But for several reasons, it's unlikely to reach that ceiling at Texas A&M,” Blue and Gold News writer Jack Soble wrote this week. “Mike Denbrock knows it, too.”

Denbrock is still installing the finer points of his offensive scheme — as opposed to defensive coordinator Al Golden, whose group is at “Level 500.” Notre Dame’s first-team offensive tackles have zero starts between them, combined. None of the wide receivers have played with the starting quarterback before, and even though they were hard at work all summer, that quarterback losing much of spring practice will probably affect their chemistry.

Keeping that in mind, the best thing that Notre Dame football fans can do is temper their expectations. Even if the Irish pull off the victory.
