When the Notre Dame football team made the Top 6 for 4-star defensive back Trystan Haynes, there were more than a few surprised recruiting analysts. That surprise might have turned to shock earlier this week when the defensive back prospect locked in an unofficial visit to see the Fighting Irish.

Landing the commitment of Haynes is still an incredible long shot. However, getting him to town on April 13 can only be counted as a win. The Irish are still squaring off against Georgia, Alabama, Miami Oklahoma and Texas A&M as far as the rest of his favorites.

It’s worth pointing out that most of the recruiting analysts still believe that the Carl Albert high prospect is going to end up a Sooner when all is said and done. 247Sports has a couple of Crystal Balls all aimed at Haynes landing in Norman. On3 gives OU a massive 94.8 percent change of winning the recruiting battle.

And yet, Notre Dame football is hosting the talented player in just a few weeks.

It makes sense that Haynes is so sought after. He was a heck of a  two-way star as a junior. In 14 games, Haynes tallied 51 total tackles, 3 interceptions and 7 pass breakups.

Haynes was also outstanding as a wide receiver in 2023. He led the team with 1,009 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns on 45 receptions. He’s also a heck of a special teams player who was Carl Albert’s leading punt and kick returner.

The wooing of Haynes is just the latest step in what has been a ramping up of Notre Dame football’s recruiting efforts since the Pot of Gold Day. The Irish have dished out dozens of offers and got their first 2026 commit.

Marcus Freeman and company are hoping they can keep the good vibes flowing and get a Notre Dame football commit from Trystan Haynes when all is said and done.
