Notre Dame football shuffling the secondary after transfer announcement
The Notre Dame football team is preparing for its biggest game of the year. As they do battle with the Louisville Cardinals this weekend, they’re also going to be trying to figure out how to plug a new hole in its secondary depth chart.
During his monday press conference, head coach Marcus Freeman delivered the news that the Irish wil need to do a bit of shuffling. That’s because one of the backup corners has decided he’d like to call somewhere other than South Bend home after the season is over.
Not long after Freeman made the announcement, corner back Jaden Mickey made it official. The sophomore took to social media to say that he’ll be leaving the Notre Dame football team once the transfer window opens. The Irish coach added Mickey will redshirt for the rest of this season.
“Coaches, teammates, staff members and supporters,” Mickey wrote on Twitter. “I ca’t put into words how grateful I am for how you have loved me and my family. Every up and down was worth it and all that my younger self could have asked for. With a heavy heart, I will be redshirting this year with plans ton on transferring after I graduate this spring. This isn’t risk, this is faith!”
Notre Dame football loses key member of secondary
Mickey’s departure is one of those things that you hoped wouldn’t happen but is hardly a surprise. There has been talk since this spring that he might be looking to go elsewhere.
The decision to leave now is a bit surprising considering he’s been getting pretty solid playing time for a secondary that is one of the best in college football. Over the team’s first four games, Mickey has played 82 snaps and according to PFF has an averall grade of 62.8 on the season.
However, if Mickey feels like he has to move on from Notre Dame football, he’s doing it the right way. Having a degree from the school will certainly come in handy when his playing days are over. Whenever that may be.
