Now that the Notrre Dame WBB season is officially over, it was time for fans to turn their attention to the next step of three former Fighting Irish stars’ basketball careers. That next step was crystallized when the trio were selected on Monday night.
First among them was Sonia Citron who was not only taken in the first round, but was third overall and looks to start her professional basketball career with the Washington Mystics. Citron became Notre Dame women’s basketball’'s highest-picked player after teammate Olivia Miles opted to enter the transfer portal rather than declare for the WNBA Draft. Miles, now commited to TCU, was projected to the be the No. 2 pick in Monday's draft.
Citron was followed by Maddy Westbeld who was taken in the second round, going No. 16 overall to the Chicago Sky. Finally, Liatu King, who spent just one season with the Notre Dame WBB program was taken in the third round by the Los Angeles Sparks.
What’s next for Notre Dame women’s basketball’s drafted trio?
Citron is from Eastchester, New York so staying on the East coast with the Mystics meant staying a little closer to home for the star Notre Dame guard. She talked about the importance of landing so close to home to ESPN shortly after being selected.
"It's a once in a lifetime opportunity. What makes it so special is that I get to do it in front of my friends and family since I am from here. ... I wouldn't be here without them.''
Citron was a three-time All-ACC Selection, and was the 2022 ACC Rookie of the Year. She also helped lead Notre Dame WBB to an ACC Tournament title in 2024 and regular season titles in both 2023 and 2025.
Westbeld suffered an injury early in the season and missed the first 13 games, but returned to average 7.6 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. King was a double-double machine for Notre Dame women’s basketball averaging 11.5 points and 10.4 rebounds a game.
