Irish Invasion Adds Two Offensive Recruits
By Walt Kosin
The 2016 Irish Invasion seems to be the gift that keeps on giving.
There had been a lull of a few weeks since the Fighting Irish had a verbal commitment and then they received four last weekend. Here’s an in-depth look at the two offensive players who committed at the Irish Invasion: Jordan Pouncey and Markese Stepp.
Jordan Pouncey is a 6’3”, 185 lb. wide receiver from Winter Park High School in Winter Park, Florida. Jordan is a cousin of two current NFL stars, Maurkice and Michael Pouncey who are centers with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins respectively.
Jordan is a three-star recruit whose commitment is similar to last year’s recruit Kevin Stepherson. Both were three star wide receiver recruits from Florida. Stepherson committed last year at the Irish Invasion just as Pouncey has done this year. Stepherson was an early enrollee who became a sensation at this year’s spring practice. Although only a three-star recruit, Pouncey chose Notre Dame over Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Michigan State, and others.

Pouncey is a very fast wide receiver with great ball catching skills who also plays cornerback. He will be given the opportunity to use his speed when he comes to summer camp in 2017.
Markese Stepp is a 6’0”, 210 lb. running back from Cathedral High School in Indianapolis who will just be entering his junior season. This member of Notre Dame’s class of 2018 is a four-star recruit who is a complete running back. Last season as a sophomore, he rushed for 1,295 yards on 150 carries and scored 17 touchdowns.
Stepp was heavily recruited and he chose Notre Dame over Michigan, Michigan State, Tennessee, Iowa, Wisconsin, Missouri, Purdue, Duke, and others. Stepp is not only a strong, balanced runner, he is also fast. He regularly runs the 40-yard dash between 4.47 and 4.50. His best time is 4.42. He is rated as the 12th best running back in the 2018 class and he looks to be a multi-year starter for the Fighting Irish.
Notre Dame fans should be happy with these two offensive recruits. Pouncey looks to be the speed receiver Notre Dame seeks. He combines great pass catching skills with speed. In getting a verbal commitment from Markese Stepp, the Fighting Irish now have a great running back to go with the other 2018 commit Phi Jurkovec, a five-star quarterback. Notre Dame is in great hands with these skill players. Another factor in having them aboard this early in the 2018 recruiting cycle is that other valued recruits are more likely to commit to Notre Dame knowing that there is a great offensive foundation already committed.
