Notre Dame has had a successful recruiting season for the class of 2017.  Among those who have given a verbal commitment to the Fighting Irish is quarterback Avery Davis.

Davis is a 5’11”, 190-lb. quarterback who attended Cedar Hill High School in Cedar Hill, Texas. He is ranked a three-star quarterback by Rivals and 247 Sports and is a four-star quarterback according to Scout and ESPN.Davis has been named the 7th Dual Threat quarterback by 247 Sports. He committed to Notre Dame over Iowa State, Texas Tech, Utah, Colorado, Pursue, Oregon State, Kansas State, Houston, Virginia, and others.

Most division I type quarterback recruits are usually three-year starters at their high school. Unfortunately for Davis he had to sit behind Justin McMillan, who is currently at LSU. Davis’ high school coach stated that Davis was accepting of his role as a backup, even though he could have started as a sophomore at most high schools.

Davis did start as a junior last season, and he threw for 2,148 yards including 25 touchdowns and had only four interceptions.  He also rushed for 873 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Offensive Coordinator Mike Sanford was impressed with Davis after watching him on film. He was captivated with his strong arm, the accuracy of his passing and his running ability. Davis runs the 40-yard dash in 4.5. ND’s top quarterback target for the 2017 class was Hunter Johnson who is a five-star QB from Indiana. Johnson committed to Tennessee a few months ago and then switched his commitment to Clemson weeks later. Davis became Notre Dame’s second option after Johnson’s commitment. With many more outstanding quarterbacks in the 2017 class, this speaks volumes for the confidence Notre Dame has in him.

Even though Davis is not an across the board four/five-star quarterback currently, he could become one following this season. Fighting Irish fans should be able to trust the coaching staff in their selection of quarterback, especially since they’ve brought the likes of Everett Golson, Malik Zaire, DeShone Kizer and Brandon Wimbush the past few seasons.
