While one certainly hopes that a new rule change will apply to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, it is a significant change for college football. While the sport moves closer to only having one transfer portal, that will open on January 2 and run until January 16, the NCAA also made one change official in that when a coach is fired or leaves, a player will have 15 days after a new coach is hired to find a new school if they want.
However, they will also have to wait five days after the change is made. Technically, the new change won't go into effect until after the NCAA has a meeting on Wednesday morning, but it will be a significant change. At the moment, players are allowed 30 days after a coach is fired or leaves.
For instance, if the Notre Dame Fighting Irish lost Marcus Freeman, players could enter the transfer portal immediately and would have a 30-day window to leave if they wanted. Now they would have to wait until 5 days after Freeman's replacement is named. They would then have roughly 15 days to decide if they wanted to leave.
Javian Osborne explodes on Friday
While most of the focus for Notre Dame is on the regular season and what might be in the transfer portal, Marcus Freeman and Co. are also having a heck of a high school recruiting run. That includes running back Javian Osborne, who continues to have a fantastic senior season.
On Friday, Osborne ran for over 300 yards and two touchdowns, and is just shy of 1,000 yards on the season. That, even though he's only played 6 games so far. Osborne continues to look like a huge steal for the Irish.
More Notre Dame Fighting Irish news
- Speaking of being hot on the recruiting trail, the Irish were named the leaders for a couple of 2027 recruits. One of them was Amarri Irvin, a 4-star linebacker out of Florida. - The other defender that Notre Dame is now leading for is a 4-star 2027 Chicago defensive lineman Brayden Parks. He was given an official prediction by Mike Singer earlier this week to be a member of the Fighting Irish.
- As for current Irish stars, Leonard Moore was named the Walter Camp FBS Defensive Player of the Week after he recorded two interceptions against Boise State in his return to the field after sitting out a few weeks with injury.
- The final pieces of the 2025-26 Notre Dame Fighting Irish women’s basketball schedule are falling into place, as the ACC announced on Monday television times and networks for the majority of this season’s matchups. In total, the Irish will play 16 games on linear television, and the remaining games will air on ACC Network Extra or ESPN+, depending on location.
