Did Notre Dame commit Julius Jones Jr show that he might be having second thoughts about his pledge? The legacy commit seemed to almost immediately shoot down any rumors that he might be showing he was repping the Miami Hurricanes when social media posts exploded all over the internet.
The supposed “hint” came in a video that 247Sports analyst Gaby Urrutia posted of the 4-star wide receiver working out. The analyst pointed out that the wide receiver was wearing Hurricanes gloves while catching passes. The Irish commit immediately had people thinking he might be considering decommitting, but Jones tried to squelch those rumors before they really got started.
Jones almost immediately quoted the post with the hashtag #goirish. The speed at which the Notre Dame commit showed that he was still all about Marcus Freeman’s program should go a long way towards making sure any speculation isn’t long-lived. This being the internet, the chances that there will be plenty of people suggesting he hinted at something and then tried to take it back won’t die.
Notre Dame fans, in particular, will almost certainly suffer a bit of a shock to the system, considering they went through this kind of situation before. Former Irish quarterback commit Deuce Knight was once considered a very strong pledge to the Golden Domers. He even went out of his way to shoot down rumors that he was decommitting when he started to get pursued by SEC schools.

Notre Dame football commit Julius Jones Jr. responds quickly to Miami buzz
In the end, Knight wearing an Auburn towel during one of his workouts did foreshadow something. Before signing day, he’d decommitted from Notre Dame and signed with War Eagle. So Irish fans can be forgiven if they are a bit nervous about Julius Jones Jr.
However, there are some rather obvious differences in the situations. The first obvious difference is that Julius Jones Jr. is a legacy commit whose father played at South Bend during his college days. The elder Jones ran for 3,018 yards across four seasons with the Irish, including a 1,268-yard campaign in 2003, and remains the sixth-leading career rusher in school history.
The legacy commit is also planning on playing with his younger brother Andre, who committed to ND on the same day as Julius. Those kind of family connections to the program are something that Knight never had.
The 4-star wide receiver talked about how excited he was about heading to South Bend for his college days right after he committed. "It's just the mystique of Notre Dame; there's only one in the world," Jones told ESPN’s Pat McAfee. "When I was up there, I felt it, and it felt different from what they can do for me now to when I'm done with football."
It’s not a surprise that Miami fans might get excited about what they thought was a hint he was looking towards the Hurricanes again. A three-time state champion at Florida's St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Jones caught 58 passes for 876 yards and 14 touchdowns as a junior last fall.
Still, the idea that Julius Jones Jr. was sending a message to Notre Dame or Hurricanes fans seemed to be blown up immediately by the commit himself. That’s only one more reason for Irish fans to be excited about his eventual arrival.
