Less than a week after 2028 quarterback Trey Tagliaferri committed to the Notre Dame football team, he's a free agent. One of the stranger recruiting developments of the Marcus Freeman era occurred on Wednesday evening in what might be the quickest known flip in the program's history.
Tagliaferri announced his decommitment to On3 analysts but has kept quiet so far, officially. However, reposting the announcement of the change in his status from Hayes Fawcett was certainly a way to make it clear the analysts had the story correct.
Tagliaferri's timing is less than ideal for Notre Dame. Several other quarterbacks in the 2028 class have pulled the trigger on their commitments not long after the New Jersey gunslinger pledged to the Fighting Irish. Of course, now that they're going back to the drawing board, those schools that think they have their 2028 QB locked in should be very wary of Freeman and quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli coming and knocking on their commit's doors.
As for Tagliaferri, it appears Bergen Catholic signal-caller has already found his next stop. Or at least he's strongly considering it. While there hasn't been an official prediction entered for him yet, the Rivals' RPM now has the Oklahoma Sooners trending to land the talented 4-star prospect.Â

Trey Tagliaferri decommitment sends Notre Dame football back to 2028 QB board
The most interesting aspect of that tidbit is that Tagliaferri went on record as being quite impressed with Brent Venables' operation, even calling it "Quarterback U." It did seem like perhaps OU had made a move in his recruitment as he took a visit to Norman the weekend before his official visit to Notre Dame.
It's also worth noting that when Tagliaferri committed on Father's Day, he admitted he didn't go to South Bend expecting to pull the trigger. He detailed how, while standing on the field at Notre Dame, he made what seemed like a spur-of-the-moment decision that his parents then co-signed.
"OU football is amazing," Tagliaferri told Sooners On SI right after his visit to Oklahoma. "Coach (Brent) Venables is an amazing coach, and I would be honored to play under him." It would appear that his love for what he saw from the Sooners stuck with him even after he pledged to Notre Dame, and he's had second thoughts.
The decommitment is painful for the Fighting Irish. Tagliaferri was named to the 2025 N.J. Football All-State third-team offense, 2025 Jersey Sports Zone’s Non-Public Offense, 2025 All-Bergen County first-team offense and 2025 Super Football All-Division first-team offense.Â
In 11 games during his sophomore season, Tagliaferri completed 131 of 211 passes for 2,215 yards with 29 touchdowns and just 3 interceptions. He added a score on the ground as well.
If there is a reason not to be too heartbroken, beyond there being plenty of time to go after someone else who might have been targeted and recruited harder without Trey Tagliaferri's commitment, it's that the Bergen Catholic QB1 never seemed to fit the profile for players Notre Dame wants at the position these days. He doesn't even have the mobility of CJ Carr, who is far from a scrambling quarterback.
