The Notre Dame Fighting Irish very quietly rolled out a relatively big change to their lacrosse helmets just ahead of the end of the regular season. The change was small enough that some fans didn’t notice right away. But it’s also something that once someone points it out, you can’t really miss it.

The change to the way the Golden Domers' helmets look has been both subtle and striking. As Twitter and devoted Lacrosse analyst James Hogan pointed out, the chrome gold is gone. In it’s place is a matte finish that is darker gold, but far less shiny.

Hogan asked his followers on X what they preferred and while at first, there were plenty of people who first admitted they hadn’t even noticed, it should come as no surprise that there were plenty of Notre Dame Fighting Irish faithful who soon decided they had an opinion.

“Funny enough, I did not even notice until someone mentioned it this weekend,” one ND fan responded. “But...I prefer the Chrome-Gold for sure.”

“The matte finish is hideous,” another responded rather matter-of-factly.

While several of the people who answered Hogan directly seem to liked the shinier version of the Chrome helmets, there were plenty who believed that the shine was a bit too much.

Other fans believe that while Chrome can look bad in other helmets, things are different when it comes to Notre Dame. As they stated, the Fighting Irish stand out as a team that should always have the shinier look.

Still others believe that the matte look blends in more with the rest of the uniform.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish lacrosse team will show off this new look for one more game in the regular season. It's certainly odd that they made a big change to their uniform so late in the season. We'll see if they stick to it.
