Well, that week where it seemed like Notre Dame football was a legitimate contender for Derek Meadows was certainly fun. Too bad it turned out Fighting Irish fans who thought Marcus Freeman and company were beating out LSU had their hopes misplaced.

On Saturday afternoon, Derek Meadows pulled the trigger for the Tigers. If he was leaning towards Notre Dame, as some believed, he changed his mind at the last minute.

And now that the Notre Dame football team is a loser in a wide receiver recruiting battle again, there are some rather loud questions going on. It’s the second recruiting loss for the Irish this week and they’ve lost out on about half a dozen top receiver targets over the last few months.

Notre Dame football wide receiver recruiting is in a rut

Notre Dame has to go back to the drawing board when it comes to wide receiver recruiting, and right now there are a lot more questions than answers. When June official visits were concluded there was confidence that Notre Dame was going to hit a home run at the position. Instead, the Irish struck out completely, and now they are starting over.

That even includes the loss of Shaun Terry. Terry had been a commit already but even he saw some sort of writing on the wall and left for Missouri.

It’s possible he didn’t appreciate Notre Dame going after so many other receivers. It’s also possible whatever is keeping ND from getting commits was bad enough for him to look elsewhere.

It is possible that the Irish are still seeing some of the issues pop up from a passing game last year that wasn’t all that impressive. Perhaps showing off the Riley Leonard/Mike Denbrock will change things this fall.

What’s clear is that right now, the Notre Dame football team’s wide receiver recruiting is an absolute mess.
