Top transfer WR seems to have left Notre Dame football in rear view

Transfer portal recruiting changes quickly and that was witnessed by Notre Dame football losing out on Josh Kelly.

By all accounts, Notre Dame football has had quite the run in the transfer portal since it officially opened a few weeks ago. Not only did they get 2024's starting quarterback in Riley Leonard, but they nabbed a couple of wide receivers so the former Duke Blue Devil has someone to throw to next season.

For a time, it looked as though the Fighting Irish might land a third receiver from the transfer portal. And he might be the best of the bunch. However, the odds that the Golden Domers are going to snatch up former Wazzu pass catcher Josh Kelly appear to be getting smaller and smaller.

According to 247Sports' Matt Zenitz believes that Texas Tech is the team to beat for Kelly now. He reported as much on X on Thursday afternoon. Zenitz has had plenty of scoops since the portal opened and he tends to be right on with those predictions.

Kelly, who took a visit to see what Notre Dame football had to offer before Beaux Collins committed, is now looking towards Lubbuck and becoming yet another nice get for Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire.

McGuire and company have landed four transfers so far this cycle in tight end Jalin Conyers, safety Jovon Jackson, offensive lineman Vinny Sciury and punter Jack Burgess. It's a group that ranks as the 14th best transfer class. Combined with his high schoolers, McGuire has the 21st ranked composite ranking according to 247Sports.

Notre Dame football not getting their man in Josh Kelly

There's a reason Kelly was a target for the Irish when he first entered the portal. In 2023, he hauled down 61 receptions for 923 yards and 8 touchdowns while averaging over 15-yards per catch for Washington State.

It's not entirely clear if Notre Dame football is ready to give up on getting a wide receiver out of the portal. However it looks like if Marcus Freeman and company want to go that route, they'll have to do it without Josh Kelly.
